Sri Lanka, officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country located in South Asia in the Indian Ocean. It is situated to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait.

Capital and Largest City: The capital of Sri Lanka is Colombo, while Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legislative capital.


Official Languages:

 Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages of Sri Lanka, reflecting the country's diverse ethnic and linguistic composition.

Population:

 As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the population of Sri Lanka was around 21 million people.

Ethnic Groups: The major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka include the Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors, and Burghers.

Religion:

 The predominant religion is Buddhism, and a significant minority practice Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity.

History: Sri Lanka has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It has been influenced by various cultures, including Indian, Arab, and European. The country was a British colony until gaining independence in 1948.

Geography:

 The island has diverse geographical features, including lush forests, mountains, and beautiful beaches. Sri Lanka is known for its biodiversity and is home to various wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and a variety of bird species.

Economy:

 Sri Lanka's economy is diverse and includes sectors such as agriculture, services, and industry. Tourism is also an essential component of the economy, with visitors attracted to the country's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Civil War:

 Sri Lanka experienced a prolonged civil conflict that lasted for several decades. The conflict between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ended in 2009. The aftermath of the war has had significant social, economic, and political implications for the country.

Cultural Heritage: 

Sri Lanka has a rich cultural heritage, with ancient cities, temples, and landmarks that showcase its historical significance. Sigiriya, an ancient rock fortress, and the sacred city of Kandy are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Polonnaruwa, another ancient city, succeeded Anuradhapura as the capital and is renowned for its well-preserved ruins.


Buddhism: Buddhism has played a crucial role in shaping Sri Lankan culture. The country is home to some of the oldest Buddhist monasteries, stupas, and statues. The sacred city of Kandy is particularly significant, hosting the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses a tooth of Lord Buddha. The annual Esala Perahera, a grand religious procession, takes place in Kandy to honor this relic.


Sigiriya: Also known as the Lion Rock, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a remarkable ancient rock fortress. Built in the 5th century AD, it features impressive frescoes, a mirror wall, and the remains of a palace at the summit.


Traditional Arts and Crafts: Sri Lanka is known for its vibrant traditional arts and crafts. Intricately designed handwoven textiles, batik prints, and traditional masks are popular items. The country is also famous for its craftsmanship in wood carving, pottery, and metalwork.

The country is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including beautiful beaches, lush tea plantations in the central highlands, and national parks. Popular natural attractions include the beaches of Bentota, Mirissa, and Trincomalee, as well as the scenic Hill Country.

Go to the Khan Clock Tower, and admire the huge red brick clock tower.

Do not miss the opportunity to go to the Planetarium Sri Lanka, which is designed in the shape of a lotus flower, and enjoy watching a virtual tour of space via a 4D display. Also see the building’s planetarium.

Visit the National Art Gallery, and explore the history of Sri Lankan arts and culture through a variety of ancient and modern artworks, classical paintings and statues made by local artists.
